What Does Customer Edge Router Mean?

A customer edge router (CE router) is a frequent component of a multiprotocol label switching architecture (MPLS) that connects to a provider edge router (PE router) to take communications from a customer side to a provider side. These types of routers are often located on customer premises.

The idea is that customer edge routers form part of an established network to achieve data transfer from the customer’s location into the provider’s architecture, which may involve a cloud storage facility or other service. The customer edge router connects to the provider edge router, which connects to a provider router that forms part of the backbone of the provider’s network. The customer edge router provides connectivity to the inside of the customer’s network.
