The idea is that customer edge routers form part of an established network to achieve data transfer from the customer’s location into the provider’s architecture, which may involve a cloud storage facility or other service. The customer edge router connects to the provider edge router, which connects to a provider router that forms part of the backbone of the provider’s network. The customer edge router provides connectivity to the inside of the customer’s network.
