What Does Communication Controller Mean?

A communication controller is small computer used to manage the communication of input/output (I/O) data in a network, host machine or computer. A communication controller facilitates user tracking of all network activities and saves all data on a mainframe computer.

Devices – such as bridges, routers and multiplexers – convert parallel data into serial data for network transfer and handle other network tasks, including error control, data compression, proper routing and security parameters.

A communication controller is also known as a front-end processor or a communications processor.
