What Does CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) Mean?

CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) is a certification for information technology (IT) professionals that confirms a candidate has successfully demonstrated mastery of DAMA International’s Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBK V2).

The core exam that all candidates need to pass is called Data Management Fundamentals. This exam covers 14 topics and test-takers are encouraged to have at least six months of industry experience.

DAMA International also offers three additional Specialist certifications to applicants who have passed the fundamental level with a score of 60% or above.

CDMP Practitioner – the applicate is encouraged to have at least 2 years of industry experience and pass both the Fundamentals exam and two additional specialist exams with scores of 70% or higher.

CDMP Master – the applicant is encouraged to have at least 10 years of industry experience and pass both the Fundamentals exam and two additional specialist exams with scores of 80% or higher.

CDMP Fellow – the applicant is encouraged to have at least 25 years of industry experience and be certified as a CDMP Master. Fellows are sometimes invited to contribute to DAMA International’s Data Management Body of Knowledge.

All DAMA International exams are open book and have one hundred multiple-choice questions, each with five answer choices.

How to Take the CDMP Exam

CDMP exams can be purchased at cdmp.info. Upon successful procurement, the examinee will receive an email with the link to the CDMP instruction platform. To help certification candidates become comfortable, DAMA International provides a 40-question practice test for the Data Management Fundamental’s exam free with all exams.

Half the exam questions are relatively straightforward, with one correct answer and four distractors. 25% of the multiple choice answer choices have alternative answers rather than all distractors, and the test-taker is asked to identify the best answer for several possible solutions.

There are two versions of each exam. The Standard version of the exam is 90 minutes long and is intended for candidates whose first language is English. The English Second Language (ESL) version allows an additional 20 minutes for candidates whose English is not their first language.

Both versions of each exam have the same number of questions (100) and the same level of complexity. DAMA International uses the Canvas Learning Management System and HonorLock platforms to ensure the integrity of exam results, which are made available almost immediately upon submission.
