Techopedia Explains Capacity Planning

Capacity planning is a systematic approach to planning for future IT resources based on current operations, demand and growth. Typically, capacity planning collects the computing capacity of the current environment and employs statistical and analytical tools to measure it against future requirements. It helps IT managers and administrators add up IT resources when they are deemed necessary. These IT resources can include hardware, software, storage, networks, physical space and IT staff. The primary objective of capacity planning is to ensure that the planned IT resources are added to the system not earlier or later than actual demand.
