A number of tools are used to test different browser characteristics; test suites also are used to check the majority of these systems.

Such tools report on information, including:

  • The type of data broadcast by a browser
  • Allowed tracking levels
  • Whether or not exploits are attached to the browser software

Techopedia Explains Browser Security Test

A browser security test is applied to determine the ability of a browser to protect networked data and computer systems from malware and other attacks.

Commonly tested characteristics include the security holes and vulnerabilities inherent to the programming of a browser. When these vulnerabilities are found, the testing tool recommends or installs appropriate patches.

Off-the-shelf software is typically used in modern browser security testing. Manual testing is also used, especially with specific tests, such as an organization that hires a white hat hacker to infiltrate browsers and patch vulnerable areas.

A browser security testing tool checks one or more of the following Web browser characteristics:

  • Internet Protocol (IP) address
  • JavaScript (JS)
  • Java applet
  • Flash player
  • Web Graphics Library (WebGL)
  • Content filters
  • Geolocation API
