What Does Army Knowledge Online Mean?
The Army Knowledge Online (AKO) is an enterprise information portal used to share and disseminate information and knowledge to the U.S. Army, Department of Defense (DoD) community and other joint military personnel. Its primary function is to serve as a collaboration and email portal while providing Business Process Management (BPM) applications, as well as information about non-classified Army operations, personnel records, e-learning and training programs.
For example, the Army Wounded Warrior Program (AW2) is a BPM application that is used to enable the diagnosis of wounded soldiers, as well as their rehabilitation.

The AKO was an experimental project in the 1990s that stemmed from the General Office Management Office. In its early form, the AKO was known as America’s Army Online (A2OL), but it was renamed due to legal issues.
Upon enlistment, all personnel are required to register an account with the AKO. The AKO follows DoD access security policies through the use of a password/username or a Common Access Card (CAC) and personal identification number (PIN). As an added security feature, passwords have a 150-day expiration, and new passwords must not match the ten most recently used passwords. When accessing without a CAC, users must answer three of their 15 personal security questions for successful verification.
